Ask the Expert: What Makes a Kitchen Both Functional and Built for Real Life?
When planning a new kitchen, it’s easy to focus on colours, finishes and the latest trends. But a truly successful kitchen is one that works effortlessly for everyday life. From busy family mornings to entertaining friends, good design should make daily routines easier, more enjoyable and more efficient.
We spoke to Timmy McAuley, Kitchen and Fitted Furniture Designer at Exorna, about the key elements that make a kitchen both practical and beautifully designed.

What makes a kitchen truly functional and built for real life?
For me, a kitchen that is truly built for real life must work just as well day-to-day as it looks in photos. It’s not just about choosing the latest style or finish; it’s about creating a space that can handle busy mornings, family meals, entertaining and everything in between.
A functional kitchen should be durable, easy to clean and comfortable to move around in. The best designs are the ones where everything feels considered, from where the bins are placed to how easily you can unload the dishwasher or reach the fridge while cooking. When a kitchen is planned properly, it makes everyday tasks feel easier and more natural.

How important is layout in day-to-day use?
Layout is one of the most important parts of any kitchen design. A beautiful kitchen can quickly become frustrating if the layout doesn’t work for the way the household uses the space.
I always look at how people naturally move through the kitchen. The sink, fridge and cooker should be within easy reach of each other, but it’s also important to think about foot traffic, especially in family homes. You don’t want people constantly walking through hot cooking zones or interrupting the main preparation area.
Zoning is also helpful. Creating clear areas for food preparation, cooking, washing up, and storage makes the kitchen feel much easier to use. It means everything has a purpose, and the space works smoothly, even at busy times of the day.

What design choices have the biggest impact on usability and flow?
Often, it’s the practical design choices that make the biggest difference. Drawers, for example, can be much more useful than standard cupboards in base units because you can see everything at a glance and access items more easily.
Worktop space is another key consideration. Having enough continuous preparation space can make cooking feel far less stressful, especially when preparing meals for a family or entertaining guests.
Materials also play a big role. Durable surfaces such as quartz or Dekton are popular because they are hardwearing, easy to maintain and well suited to busy homes. Good lighting is just as important. A mix of overhead lighting and under-cabinet task lighting helps the kitchen work well throughout the day, whether you’re cooking, cleaning or creating a more relaxed atmosphere in the evening.

How can homeowners maximise storage, especially in smaller kitchens?
In smaller kitchens, every bit of space needs to work hard. One of the best ways to maximise storage is to use the full height of the room, taking wall cabinets up towards the ceiling where possible. This provides extra storage for items that aren’t used every day and helps avoid wasted space.
Internal storage solutions can also make a huge difference. Corner pull-outs, deep drawers, door organisers and adjustable dividers all help make awkward areas more usable. Rather than simply adding more cupboards, it’s about making sure the storage you do have is easy to access and genuinely practical.
For pots, pans and lids, deep drawers with dividers or quality mechanisms can be a real game-changer. They keep heavier items organised and stop the kitchen from becoming cluttered. Ultimately, the goal is to create a space where everything has a place, so the kitchen feels calm, practical and easy to live with.
