Real Kitchen Focus – A Lavishly Modern Kitchen in Lisburn
Designing a dream kitchen that’s both timeless and personal requires more than just premium materials; it calls for expert insight, skill, and a clear understanding of how a space should function day to day.
In collaboration with Ireland’s Kitchen Guide, STORI is proud to feature a standout project by Timeless Kitchens, one of our Approved STORI Retailers. Showcased in the Winter 2025 edition, available from 12th December, this special Q&A feature highlights how designer Liz McTasney expertly transformed her client’s vision into a refined, high-performing kitchen.
What prompted this kitchen renovation?
This was an extension to an existing home, and the kitchen played a central role in making the new space both functional and inviting. It was designed to be a space for cooking, dining and family life.
What was the client’s brief?
The client had a clear vision of what they wanted in terms of looks, cooking style and how they planned to use the space. I listened carefully and translated their needs into a design that combined visual impact with practical day-to-day functionality.

How would you describe the overall style and layout of this kitchen?
It’s a timeless shaker-style kitchen in painted ash from STORI. The layout was designed to flow seamlessly into the adjoining living area, creating a cohesive open-plan space that feels both classic and contemporary.
What materials, finishes and colour palette were used?
We chose the Aldana range from STORI, painted ash Shell cabinetry with a bold Cannon Black island. The finish is complemented by moulded skirting plinths, brushed nickel knobs and cup handles for a refined, traditional touch. The worktops are Silestone with a New York edge detail, chosen for their durability and elegant appearance. I was very fortunate that the client knew exactly what they liked from the start.

What appliances and features were chosen?
A brushed nickel Quooker tap was installed for both style and convenience, along with an integrated bin to maintain a clean, streamlined look. These features blend perfectly into the cabinetry while adding functionality. The kitchen also includes a range cooker, a strong extractor for odour control, an American-style fridge freezer and an integrated dishwasher, all chosen to support the client’s cooking style while maintaining the overall aesthetic.
Were there any standout features or bespoke details that make this kitchen unique?
Yes. One of the most distinctive features is the set of bi-fold counter units on either side of the bespoke canopy hood. These doors open away from the range to reveal additional worktop space when needed and can be closed to conceal small appliances, keeping the area clutter-free and beautifully streamlined.

How did you ensure the kitchen is not only stylish but also functional?
We included well-placed cabinetry for easy access, plenty of storage and an oversized island that features a working sink and sociable seating. The layout supports both everyday tasks and entertaining.
What were the client’s priorities?
The client wanted a kitchen that was equally suited to cooking, dining and living. They asked for a striking design that would remain functional and uncluttered. We achieved this by including hidden storage, flexible worktop areas and thoughtful detailing throughout.

What makes Timeless Kitchens the right fit for homeowners planning a new kitchen?
We pride ourselves on truly listening to our clients. Every kitchen we design is tailored to the individual, their lifestyle, preferences and practical needs. Excellent customer service is at the heart of everything we do, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience from start to finish. As an approved STORI retailer, we also bring access to a trusted brand and a wide selection of quality ranges to help you achieve your perfect kitchen.
Are there any common pitfalls homeowners should avoid when planning a new kitchen?
Definitely. A common mistake is focusing too much on the look and not enough on functionality. Layout, workflow and storage are just as important as aesthetics. People often overlook essential details like bin storage, corner solutions and power points. These are the features that make a kitchen easy to live with long-term. It’s also important not to rush the planning process or skip the showroom visit.

What current kitchen trends are you seeing most often requested by clients?
Right now, it’s a 50/50 split between timeless painted styles in soft, warm tones and very modern kitchens with dark, moody colour palettes. Both have their place depending on the home and the client’s personal style.
Are there any emerging trends you expect to become big in the next year or two?
Yes. We’re seeing growing interest in mixed materials, like combining wood with painted finishes, fluted glass and metallic details. Hidden pantries, open shelving with integrated lighting and utility nooks are becoming more popular. Smart technology and app-controlled appliances are also on the rise. In terms of colours, muted earth tones and soft greens are making a comeback.

How do you approach sustainability and long-lasting design in your projects?
We believe sustainable design starts with creating kitchens that are built to last. That means using durable materials, timeless styles that won’t date quickly and recommending high-quality, energy-efficient appliances. We also encourage features like Quooker taps and food waste disposals to improve efficiency and reduce waste. Where possible, we source materials from nearby suppliers and support local manufacturing.
Roughly how long does a project like this take?
In this case, the client loved the first design we presented and returned within a week to confirm their selections. The order was confirmed within two weeks, and fitting was scheduled six weeks later due to bespoke components. The first installation took three days. Worktops were templated on day three and fitted two weeks later. We then returned for one final day to install the sink backs and shelves once other trades were complete.

Finally, what advice would you give homeowners about starting their own kitchen journey?
Start by visiting the showroom. Seeing your options in person makes a huge difference. Don’t just focus on doors and worktops. Explore the internals. Great storage solutions like corner systems, larders and bins can completely change how you use the space. My top two features? A Quooker tap and a waste disposal unit. They’re game-changers for everyday living.
